Formally, Somaliland and Somalia willingly joined together in July 1 in 1960 to make what was once referred to as the “Democratic Republic of Somalia” but the concept was to unite Somali-speaking territories including Ogaden, a region of Ethiopia, sooner or later. Somaliland, the pioneer for unity, gave its independence to Mogadishu without any written treaty between the two and this technical fault made Somaliland vulnerable both locally and globally.
